This blog represents a partial archival record of social engagements and experiments that took place at the old Skizum Studios location in Berlin Germany.  The foundations for new Skizum Studios Collective will be developed in 2013 after completing a new project space called “Das Baumhaus” in the Ground floor storefront space of Gerichtstr. 23 in Berlin.

Winter Warm Up Party :: 19.11 @ 21.00

The cold set in,

but the sun shined bright.

Ahh autumn in Berlin,

what a warmish delight.

The people came together

on one special eve.

In a cozy salon room,

too nice to believe.

Revelers brought candles,

even flowers and wine.

The mood quickly grew

from better to superfine.

People started chatting,

going off on a trip.

The music ebbed and flowed

from groovy to hip.

The dancers started dancing

and the jivers did talk!

before everyone knew it,

it was after 4 o’clock.

As the sun slowly rose,

and the sky glowed red.

The warm vibe in the house

kept everyone from bed.

Great conversations were had,

a few romances did unfold.

It would be for many years to come,

that these stories would be told.

So if you’re feeling lucky,

and this story appeals to you.

Soiree :: Live – Exsonvaldes :: Sa 20/11 @ 20.30 Uhr

This month we celebrate the house party with a band that loves to play at house parties.  Exsonvaldes is a 4 man Pop/Rock Band from Paris.  Simon, Antoine, Guillaume and Martin met 10 years ago in University and are influenced by Nirvana, Radiohead and various other Belgian indie bands.  They released their first record in 2004 Time we spent together (Noise Digger) and organized a 100 concerts for this first tour.  They worked one and a half years to record their second Album in 2009: “Near the Edge of Something Beautiful”, mastered by Mike Marsh (Depeche Mode, Klaxons).  During their tour they came to realize that their best gigs were at private apartments and that’s how they recorded their latest acoustic album in 2010, “There’s nothing like homes” and that’s just how and where you will enjoy them here in our home… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffxPGTKBjxg

Skizum Salon II :: Funny Man :: So 03.10 – 19.30

The Skizum Salon bi-monthly event series offers an engaging atmosphere and a stage for people with interesting ideas to present their work and get feedback from those in attendance…

Paul Salamone is an American writer, designer, and stand-up comedian who performs in English in Berlin’s growing Anlgophonic comedy scene. He organizes various nights in town and co-hosts the East Side Comedy show every Saturday with Rey Melara.  He also happens to be one of the most funny and talented people I know.

Come join us this Sunday to catch a bit of Paul’s act, hear his story about life as a funny man, designer, promoter and all around interesting fellow.  Doors open at 19.00 and the presentation starts at 20.00.  Afterwards I’ll play some classic dj sets of mine and maybe even do a little live set.  Entry is free and you can bring whatever you like to drink or snack on.  Gerichtstr. 23 VH 3.OG links (S/U-Bahn Wedding)

Skizum Salon I :: Virtual Canvas :: Sa 18.09 – 21Uhr

“Virtual Canvas” is the first edition of our new series and features miAm, the lightwriting project of Michael Henckus and Marcus Bläsing.  The second part of the evening features you getting to know some of our other interesting guests while listening to the ground breaking album “Woob2”, an aural feast…  Feel free to bring whatever you would like to drink to our new location, Gerichtstr. 23 VH 3.OG li; doors open at 20.00 and the presentation starts at 21.00.

miAm :: Michael and Marcus gained experience working in various traditional photo studios and locations but were always interested in creating clever lighting scenarios to enhance their subjects.  Eventually, teamed up at an international light writing festival and didn’t stop exploring the infinite boundaries of long time exposure since.  Using several lightsources and colurfoiled stencils on different settings they create temporary light installations that can only be seen after exposure.   They also do live shows where the audience can witness the whole process of doing lightwriting together with a model.  for further information please visit: www.miam-photo.de

Woob2 :: Six years ago, a friend of mine in New York turned me on to this album “Woob2″ by the UK artist Woob who also goes by the name Paul Frankland.  While listening to this album I was completely swept into a lush and expressive 3D sonic world full of pure emotional and psychological story telling without many words.  The closest thing I can compare this album to is “Darkside of the Moon” by Pink Floyd for it’s impecably produced uninterrupted flow of conscious thought except “Woob2″ could be more easily classified as a tribal type of sample based minimal electronica with hints of breakbeat influence.  This album was released only on cd in 1995 and has since become a collectors classic; if you can actually find one that is really for sale between 100 and 150 euro, count yourself lucky…

Skizum Salon :: Housewarming Party :: Sa 28.08

After being gentrified out of  our last place in F-hain, we found a new location and are finally settled in here in our groovy new building in Wedding.  To celebrate, we’re having a housewarming party on Saturday, August 28; the festivities start at 21.30.  Bring plenty of your favorite drinks and all your good vibes.  If you can’t make it out this weekend, don’t worry we’ll be hosting some “salon style” events every few weeks throughout the year.  Peace, Scottie b

fundamentally speaking, the world is governed by the effects of human behavior.  human behavior can be thought of as being motivated by the fulfillment of the needs of individuals and groups as influenced by their experienced history.  it’s not nature vs nurture but, nature influenced by nurture.  humankind has invested a great deal of time and energy in deconstructing the effects of nurture without a clear understanding of nature.  isn’t it about time that we started to try to understand who we are and how we are motivated so that we can learn to come into balance with ourselves and each other?  the real question is, how do we get there?  lets at least start searching for the answers…

This Koyaanisqatsi-like documentary film introduces us to our home, Earth, in a condensed history of the origins of life, showing us how inextricably connected all of the systems on Earth are; from the atmosphere, to the water bodies, soil and all of the vegetation and species.  With lovely aerial images sweeping across different continents, it tells the stories of different species and particularly, in the various stages of human development, how humanity has depleted resources and radically tilted the planets’ balance, in just the last 60 years.  It states that we have no choice but to have hope, recommending renewable energy and sustainable development practices among other tactics that we, the wise animals, Homo Sapiens, can employ, as we become accountable and begin taking actions to reverse this process.

German Language Salon :: Freitags :: 18.00 – 22.00

Since I first set up shop in Berlin several years ago, it’s been a bit a of a challenge for me to learn the german language to the extent where I can effectively communicate in both writing and speaking.  At times, this lack of language skill has been frustrating and limiting; I’m sure some of you can relate to this especially if you find yourself living or hanging out with people who speak your native language.

So, during the past year I have been taking german lessons at school here in F-hain and I am finally starting to understand the structure and syntax, enough to communicate in german better.  After speaking with many german language teachers and students, I realized that having an evening of interesting social interaction, while speaking german, would be a good idea.  The idea is to get together a group of interesting people who would like to improve their german language skills with native german speakers who are interested in helping us learn.

Therefore, I would like to invite those of you who are interested in being part such an evening to attend the on Fridays, starting the 12th of Feb. here at Skizum Studios (Wühlischstr. 12, EG rechts);  For now, the event will be held on Fridays but feel free to suggest other days or times that may work better for you and we’ll see how things go.  The salon will be open from 6:00 until 10-ish.  Depending on how many people show up, the event will be held upstairs in our common room and or downstairs since we now have a nice gas heater that makes the cellar all toasty warm.

We have a projector and a dvd player so we can watch films or connect to a computer.  There are also some board games here but feel free to bring whatever entertainment media, snacks and beverages you would like to indulge in and/or share.

deutschsprachiger Stammtisch

Sehr geehrte Friedländer-Studenten und -Lehrer,

ich habe viele Studenten und Lehrer angesprochen, ob ein wöchentlicher deutschsprachiger Stammtisch eine gute Idee wäre. Ich bin damit auf ein großes Interesse gestoßen.

Deshalb lade ich alle Interessenten zum ersten Treffen am Mittwoch, den 27. Januar, in die Skizum Studios ein (Wühlischstr. 12, EG rechts), das ist in meinem eigenen „Erdgeschoss-Galarie-WG-Laden“, in unmittelbarer der Nähe der Friedländer-Schule.

Wir haben einen Beamer, um Filme sehen zu können und viele verschiedene Brettspiele. Aber Ihr könnt auch Eure Filme, Spiele etc. mitbringen. Der Abend beginnt um 19.30 Uhr.

Ihr können auch gern einen anderen Tag oder einen günstigeren Termin vorschlagen. Ich würde das gern in meine Planungen einbeziehen.
