German Language Salon :: Freitags :: 18.00 – 22.00

January 27, 2010 by scottieb

Since I first set up shop in Berlin several years ago, it’s been a bit a of a challenge for me to learn the german language to the extent where I can effectively communicate in both writing and speaking.  At times, this lack of language skill has been frustrating and limiting; I’m sure some of you can relate to this especially if you find yourself living or hanging out with people who speak your native language.

So, during the past year I have been taking german lessons at school here in F-hain and I am finally starting to understand the structure and syntax, enough to communicate in german better.  After speaking with many german language teachers and students, I realized that having an evening of interesting social interaction, while speaking german, would be a good idea.  The idea is to get together a group of interesting people who would like to improve their german language skills with native german speakers who are interested in helping us learn.

Therefore, I would like to invite those of you who are interested in being part such an evening to attend the on Fridays, starting the 12th of Feb. here at Skizum Studios (Wühlischstr. 12, EG rechts);  For now, the event will be held on Fridays but feel free to suggest other days or times that may work better for you and we’ll see how things go.  The salon will be open from 6:00 until 10-ish.  Depending on how many people show up, the event will be held upstairs in our common room and or downstairs since we now have a nice gas heater that makes the cellar all toasty warm.

We have a projector and a dvd player so we can watch films or connect to a computer.  There are also some board games here but feel free to bring whatever entertainment media, snacks and beverages you would like to indulge in and/or share.

Peace,
Scottie b

p.s. here’s the invite first invite i put together for the folks in my language school….

deutschsprachiger Stammtisch

Scott

Celebrating the new year is only time when the vast majority of the people on the planet actually have the opportunity to share a common experience with joy and hope.  Gathering together in a euphoric and stimulating environment just seems to be the right thing to do when so many dreams and desires are blooming, busting and booming in the air.  In pursuit of that spirit, I’m happy to announce ‘MISSION’; a soiree worthy of the task…

The Mission for new year’s eve:

Bring together a house full of clever and interesting people in an authentically conscious, groovy and euphoric environment that stimulates all of our senses to engage in creating an inspiring evening truly worthy of remembering on this special occasion.

I’ll be Djing from my laptop, with my Mashine Drum unit, and my Novation X-station too. You know how I do, it will be spontaneous and so fresh that you’ll not be able to tell whether it’s live or Memorex. Now, for those who missed my set at Club Tausend, Badeschiff and Raw Temple and complained because you heard about it- you now have no excuse not to show up and show us how funky you can get. My set is from 2am until… I stop. C’mon, inspire me, I dare ya!”

An evening of film accompanied by live music :: Di 15.12 – 20Uhr

December 10, 2009 by scottieb

Das Keiner Ensemble Presents :

Le Samourai (1967)

Melville’s masterpiece about a contract killer, a modern day samuraï, is the cinematic embodiment of cool. Alain Delon plays a double crossed assasin who stays one step ahead of the law in what becomes a very smart cat and mouse plot. Every single movement he makes is done with a cold calculated precision; the way he puts on his hat, smokes a cigarette, and handles a gun.

Jim Jarmusch paid homage to Le Samouraï with the crime-drama, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, starring Forest Whitaker as a meditative, loner assassin who lives by the Bushido code.

Where: Skizum Studios, Wühlischstrasse 12. Enter through the Storefront Door to the left of the main entrance.

When: Tuesday December the 15th.

Time: Doors open at 8p.m., Show starts at 9p.m..

An evening of film accompanied by live music :: Mi Dez 2 – 20.00

November 30, 2009 by scottieb

Das Keiner Ensemble (Jason Arsenault & Sven Magnussen) Presents :

Chelovek’s kino-apparatom -Der Mann mit der Kamera

“This playful film is at once a documentary of a day in the life of the Soviet Union, a documentary of the filming of said documentary, and a depiction of an audience watching the film. Even the editing of the film is documented. We often see the cameraman who is purportedly making the film, but we rarely, if ever, see any of the footage he seems to be in the act of shooting! “

Where: Skizum Studios, Wühlischstrasse 12. Enter through the Storefront Door to the left of the main entrance.

While most of the city is still experiencing a Mauerfall overkill hangover we are about to celebrate the building of a new wall here at Skizum (MAP) that opens up the border between our gallery upstairs and our event space downstairs.

Our first official reunification event, “Encounter Berlin”, comes to us from tatr productions based in Oslo.  We’ll be screening video works all night long upstairs from international artists.

Starting at 21.00 (sharp) downstairs, I will be performing a theatrical lecture based on the theme of social sustainability with accompaniment by Florina Speth (electro cello) and Phil Cooksey (piano).  Later in the evening jazz vocalist extradinaire Sandra Kolstad and her band will be perform a couple of swinging sets.  In between live sets you can expect to hear some tasty grooves playing on the turntables.

The evening will also feature a live painting installation performed by Maria Torres Subira, a documentary installation of over 500 photos documenting the most recent “encounter” series event.

FILMS:

Sense of dictance – Kaia Kjos-Kendall, NO/US

Terezin, 1944 – Raquel Stern, US

Mumbai express – Virgile van Ginneken, FR

TBA – Olja Koslova, RU

Audiatour – Daniel Oslo, NO/IN

encounter:oslo – tatr prod – collab Intl.

Studio II – tatr prod – collab Intl.

Coconut – tree of life – Les Intouchables, FR/NO/IN

A Special message from the folks at tatr…..

Point of reference: The “encounter:” series is a traveling, independent venue for interaction between artists and presentation of their work. Emphasizing independently produced material, we aim to provide an alternative, friendlier mode of exposure and distribution for creatives of all disciplines, both locally and online.

Last season tatr production were based in Oslo, Norway, organizing several exhibits and productions. An effort culminating in the magnificent collaborative piece “ecounter:oslo”. Check out our online channel to see the piece and trailers for some of the other titles. Enjoy :)

Now we’re here in the city of beautiful, peace loving creatives, and we are more than proud to present the first of this winters series of events. In collaboration with Skizum Studios in Friderichshain, we invite you to a laid back, interdisciplinary one-night-only experience.

Save Berlin :: 3 Day Festival :: Nov 13 – 15

November 10, 2009 by scottieb

Save Berlin flyer

Save Berlin is a three-day festival of art, music, film and performance in and around the disused swimming pool of Stattbad Wedding (MAP) which aims to catalogue and present ideas about the urban condition of Berlin.  How is the city changing and what can be done to guide that change in ways that are good for the soul of the city?  A German and Turkish description of the event can be found online on the Save Berlin website.

There will be three floors of exhibitions, live performances, installations, films, parties, food and drinks.  Architects, artists, performers, musicians, and other imaginative Berliners will present their ideas and visions. They’ll be revisiting the past, challenging the present and showing their alternatives for the future – in the form of concrete proposals and artistic works.

For my part, I will be performing a theatrical lecture commenting on gentrification and social sustainability with accompaniment by electro cellist Florina Speth in the deep end of an empty swimming pool while bathing in video projections on Sunday, the 15th at 5pm.  Check out the rest of the schedule for other events and festivities:

Friday 13 November:

Gentrification Breakdown :: Party :: Sa Sept 19

September 16, 2009 by scottieb

Gentrification: The process kicking people out of inexpensive housing so it can be renovated and rented out for 2 times as much.

Well, it’s finally happen to us here at skizum studios…  We fought back and now we have the right to stay here until the end of May 2010.  Unfortunately, it cost 2300 euro to sort the situation out with lawyers, and it has to be paid by January…

From now until June 2010 things are going to get real active around here as we only have until then to use this space.  We’re going to start things out by having a party to celebrate the last seven years here, the next 8,5 months we still have here and all the clever experiences yet to come, wherever that may be…

Doors open at 22.00, first band starts at 23.00, 2 euro at the door, Wühlischstr. 12 EG & Keller – Fhain (MAP)

Patrick Bower is a songwriter from Brooklyn, New York. His band, which varies in size from two to six members, plays a moody yet playful kind of psychadelic folk inspired by the likes of Scott Walker, Leonard Cohen and Syd Barret. The music is melodic and lyrical and relies on Bower’s strong, soulful vocals and dark, evocative imagery.
